The Groningen city council has announced research towards the possibility of a new form of public transport between the city centre and the Zernike Campus in the city. To keep the Campus accessible, research is already being done into better bus or train connections, whilst a tram has also been proposed.
One of the other options that came up during a council meeting is a tram without rails. This “Autonomous Rapid Transit” runs on rubber tires and is a mix between a bus and a tram. The vehicle is already in use in a number of cities in China.
In addition to this tram, the regular tram, light rail and other innovative and sustainable traffic concepts must also be included in the research.
A majority of the municipal council agreed to do the study, which means that the municipality of Groningen will now investigate the various options and their advantages and disadvantages
