The bicycle was welcomed in Groningen as an addition to its hydrogen-powered vehicle fleet of, among other things, garbage trucks and busses. It will be tested by various departments of the municipality. Following this pilot run, more bicycles may be purchased of a new model, available on the market in 2022. The new model promises to be about € 2500 below the price of the current model.
Gerrit Griffioen, head of the Central Workshop of the municipality of Groningen, had been looking at implementing the hydrogen bikes for about two years. However, he only wanted to do so if it could be filled at the gas stations of Holthausen. The company Holthausen is a forerunner of hydrogen in the province of Groningen. The hydrogen supplied by Holthausen is 100% green, because it is generated by the solar park next to the filling station.
The bicycle fits with the municipality’s intention to make the city center of Groningen emission-free. Electric vehicles have also been considered, but they would place too great a burden on the electricity network.
